New future for ancient seaport

Through the Spanish blockade of the ports of Holland during the Dutch War of Independence, the North German city of Emden became the largest transhipment port at the North Sea. Late last century the ‘Alte Binnenhafen’, the ancient seaport, became available for housing.

Architects from home and abroad were invited under a contest to build a so-called ‘waterfront’.
